John’s vision for JR Meat Company was for it to be a meat processing plant, locker, and restaurant supplier; however, Porterville had a bigger vision.
Soon, people who ate at the restaurants would want to know where to get those same tasty steaks and juicy burgers for their Sunday barbeques. So people started walking through the doors of JR and were able to order steaks cut to their specifications.
Shelley Cumming, the current Owner of JR Meat Company, was born and raised in Porterville. Cumming and her husband Sean have been in the meat business since they were born.
“My husband and I both have degrees in animal science, met in school, and after graduating from Fresno State, we joined the industry and several processing plants in the Central Valley. Our children are now involved in the business as well,” said Cumming.
Shelley and her husband had mutual friends that told them that the previous owner was looking for someone to purchase JR Meat Company, and 18-20 months later, they bought the business.
JR Meats is a custom retail meat shop that provides distribution to restaurants and other businesses in the Central Valley, which was a perfect fit for Eagle Mountain Casino’s new property when they decided on a meat distributor.
“The relationship with Eagle Mountain Casino has come full circle. When we purchased the business, we talked about potential future customers, and I had some friends that were part of the Tule River Tribe who mentioned the needs of the casino”, said Cumming. Soon after, Sean and Shelley reached out and built a relationship with Eagle Mountain Casino.
“Growing up here and knowing a lot of the people in the Tule River Tribe, it’s exciting to be able to service them in this new experience they have built from the ground up,” said Cumming.
JR Meats will provide meat products and steaks from Harris Ranch to Eagle Mountain Casino’s new property food venues and the popular River Steakhouse.

JR Meat Company are excited for Eagle Mountain Casino guests to experience Harris Ranch beef at the new property when the doors officially open.
“The new property is amazing, and the state-of-the-art technology that they have implemented in the casino is incredible. From the outsider’s perspective, getting to learn what goes into the building of the project from a design standpoint, it was an incredible experience to check it out”, said Cumming.
The anticipation is building for Eagle Mountain Casino’s new property, which is scheduled to open in 2023. “Steak products from JR Meats will retain the consistent quality for Eagle Mountain Casino’s new property, and we will exceed any expectation for having an outstanding center of the plate protein,” said Cumming.
Currently, Eagle Mountain Casino is temporarily closed due to the recent storms and will reopen soon. Eagle Mountain Casino is located 17 miles east of Porterville and is a full-service casino owned and operated by the Tule River Tribe. Guests must be 18 years of age to enter. The casino features the Grizzly Food Court and the River Steakhouse. Eagle Mountain Casino is a short drive from Bakersfield or Visalia.
The new casino property is scheduled to open in 2023, off Highway 65 in Porterville, CA, next to the Porterville Fair Grounds. The new property will double in size, growing to over 100,000 square feet, featuring new dining options, 1750 slot machines, 20 table games, and a state-of-the-art event center.
